MARIE ANTIKAINEN

I’m a scenographer based in Finland and since 2016 I have worked as a resident set and costume designer at the Kuopio City Theatre. I graduated with a BA(hons) in Theatre Design from London's Rose Bruford College and an MA in Set Design from the Aalto University of Art and Design in Helsinki. During my career I have worked as both a resident and a freelance scenographer at numerous repertory and fringe theatre companies in Finland and in the UK. I have also been involved in the founding of two theatre companies. I was awarded the Finnish Set and Costume Designer’s (Lavastus ja pukusuunnittelijat LP) Lavastussäde Award for my 2023 set design of the production Hytti nro6.

As a designer I have worked in both director lead and collective working processes in theatre productions ranging from the contemporary to the traditional. My designs have been part of productions on big and small theatre stages and also site specific and immersive performances. In addition I have worked on communal art projects in multidisciplinary ways exploring new practices of performance. Along the years I have worked on more than 50 theatre productions and in most of the productions I have designed both the set and the costumes. Some of my work at the Kuopio City Theatre include productions Marie Antoinette (set and costume design 2024), Hytti nro6 (set design 2023), The House of Bernarda Alba (set design 2019) and Frida (set and costume design 2016 / and the re-design for the Tampereen Työväen Teatteri production of 2024). Olen ammatiltani skenografi ja vuodesta 2016 olen työskennellyt lavastus- ja pukusuunnittelijan tehtävissä Kuopion Kaupunginteatterissa. Valmistuin lavastus- ja pukusuunnittelijaksi (BA) Lontoon Rose Bruford Collegesta ja lavastussuunnittelijaksi (TaM) Aalto-yliopiston Taideteollisesta korkea-koulusta. Urani aikana olen tehnyt lavastus- ja pukusuunnittelutöitä sekä kiinnityksellä että freelancerina useassa kaupunginteatterissa ja vapaan kentän teatteriryhmässä niin Suomessa kuin Englannissa. Lisäksi olen ollut perustamassa kahta teatteriryhmää ja toiminut teatteriproduktioiden koollekutsujana. Vuonna 2023 minulle myönnettiin Lavastus- ja pukusuunnittelijat LP:n jakama Lavastussäde -palkinto tekemästäni näytelmän Hytti nro6 lavastussuunnittelusta.

Skenografina olen työskennellyt sekä ohjaajavetoisissa että kollektiivisissa työskentelyprosesseissa teatteritalojen erikokoisilla näyttämöillä ja niiden ulkopuolelle sijoittuneissa immersiivissä sekä paikkasidonnaisissa produktioissa. Lisäksi olen toiminut monialaisesti uusia esitysmuotoja tutkivissa yhteisötaideprojekteissa. Suunnittelemiani teatteriproduktioita on vuosien varrella kertynyt yli 50 ja suureen osaan näistä olen suunnitellut sekä lavastuksen että puvut. Viime vuosien töistäni mainittakoon mm. Kuopion Kaupunginteatterin Marie Antoinette (lavastus- ja pukusuunnittelu 2024), Hytti nro6 (lavastussuunnittelu 2023), Bernarda Alban talo (lavastussuunnittelu 2019) ja Frida (lavastus- ja pukusuunnittelu 2016 / sekä uudestaan suunniteltuna Tampereen Työväen Teatterilla 2024).
